Wednesday Education – 6:30 p.m.

Confirmation Classes begin at this time each week.  This is a ministry of the congregation and I ask congregational members to be a part of this.  I tend to offer teaching with the hope of challenging adults and youth alike to grow in their faith understandings.  I highly value youth and adults being together for conversation about matters of life and faith.  We’ll be using interesting books to help support the teaching and conversations.

So… the point… I would like to see nearly as many adults as confirmation students in the Wednesday education classes.  It could be a “come-as-you-can” type thing but it will be far less effective if there are only junior high people in attendance.  Please support the confirmation ministry at Dekorra by joining into the Wednesday evening classes.

We Didn’t Create a Group yet for National Youth Gathering…

…but, a number of people have suggested interest in the special gathering next summer.  Registration opens today; individuals need to register under a congregation group.  I’ll establish that today when I learn the congregation’s ELCA identity number.

This 2012 event is open to everyone currently in grades 8-12 and provides a powerful faith/life experience for young people.  40,000 youth are expected at theNew Orleansevent.

Corn-Maze For Youth Group – Saturday

Information is spreading about a youth activity this coming Saturday (October 15).  We’ll meet at the church at 2 p.m.  Join Us for a fun-filled afternoon.

All-Committee Night –THIS MONDAY at 7 p.m.

These different committees carry a lot of responsibility for the life and ministry of the congregation.  Consider joining us tomorrow and becoming part of a small-group community that develops with each of the congregation’s committees.

Upcoming Plans For Sundays

  • Next Sunday, October 16: I’ll be offering some teaching about Holy Communion after each worship service.  This will be appropriate for families and all ages.  It could be particularly helpful to people who are wondering about their child receiving the bread and wine of Holy Communion.  Join Us!
  • Sunday, October 23: I’ll be offering some teaching and training for people who are interested in “extending” the bread and wine of communion to those who are not able to worship with us.  This is drawn from our Pastoral Care liturgies of the current hymnal.  Feel free to join us to learn more.
  • Sunday, October 30 – Reformation: The Affirmation of Baptism liturgy will be included in worship, along with an invitation for people to come to the communion rail to receive a confirmation blessing.  This is the liturgy used in a confirmation service.  The COLOR of the day is red and it can be an appropriate color to include in your clothing choices.
  • Sunday, November 6 – All Saints: On this day each year we remember the saints in our lives that have died, particularly during the past year.  I’ve come to understand that space is available for photos of loved ones.  There will be time in the prayers during which people will be invited to speak the names of loved ones who have died.
  • Sunday, November 13: A stewardship emphasis will be a part of the day.  Plans are still being made.  It might be such that people will be invited to make a pledge of their time, talents, and treasures for the new church year which begins with Advent on November 27.
  • Sunday, November 20: This Sunday concludes the church year and the worship service will have a special “Liturgical-Year” liturgy in which we walk briefly through each of the six major seasons of the church year.  It is a unique service and can be helpful for people to gain understanding about our yearly rhythm of worship.
